Artist Aurel Schmidt seems to be everywhere these days, from the Whitney Biennial to the pages of Purple, so it only makes sense that she’s found her way into Opening Ceremony, too. Humberto Leon and Carol Lim commissioned Schmidt to create a logo for the new Ace Hotel OC shop, and she obliged in her own creepy-cool style, spelling out Opening Ceremony in a self-created alphabet of cigarette butts, dollar bills, donuts, lighters, and bloody Band-Aids. Now the store’s going one better, screening Schmidt’s letters onto pre-worn vintage tees. They’re for a particular type—blood-spatter and bacon-grease enthusiasts, this one’s for you—but we’re betting they’ll go fast. Until then, a full spelled-out set decorates the hotel shop windows. And not that we’d advocate cutting corners where art is concerned, but downtowners, it’s half the trip to the Whitney!

Moschino is all about diversifying these days, which helps explain its new Maison Moschino hotel in Milan and the luggage Rosella Jardini debuted on the Cheap & Chic runway. Now you can bring the brand home, too: The customized Philippe Starck “Mademoiselle” chairs by Kartell that decorate several of the hotel’s rooms are now available by special order. The label may be branching out, but it’s staying true to its design signatures; the Kartell chair is covered in the same bows Jardini liberally applies to her ready-to-wear. Fair warning to those who’d spruce up their own maisons: Like all special orders, this one’s more Chic than Cheap.

Moschino, Sitting Pretty

Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick emerged as one of awards season’s better-dressed stars, with a far better batting average, dress-wise, than many of her fellow actresses could claim. We were curious to see if she’d keep up the streak once the carpets were re-rolled, and judging from an appearance in Japan today to promote Up in the Air, looks like the answer is yes. Kendrick looks great in a flouncy, strapless number in chilly pastel blue, and her matching peep-toe platforms are to die for. But we’ve got to take issue with the thick belt she’s finished the look off with, which makes the petite actress look short-waisted. What do you think? Is Kendrick’s look red-carpet ready, or does it have you singing the blues?

As store names go, EPIC isn’t exactly modest. But Rhianon Jones and Tristan Scott’s new Echo Park boutique—which, in fairness, stands for Echo Park Independent Co-op—might live up to its name. In the spirit of Angeleno pride, the shop is stocking only L.A.-based designers. They’ve filled the former bowling alley (a vintage sign, pins and all, still sits atop the brick building) with a slew of independent local designers—43 and counting—you likely aren’t familiar with (save for Brian Lichtenberg, arguably the most household of names on the roster). In stock are one-of-a-kind frocks from Dear Creatures, jewelry by Laura Kranitz, and headpieces by Deadbird (Bat for Lashes-appropriate headdresses, worn by more than one partygoer at Friday night’s opening bash).

“We’re trying to get more eco-friendly lines,” said Jones, who got her start in fashion writing about sustainable design, at the tightly packed launch party. She and Scott, a former sales associate and stylist, are likewise “working with designers to commission eco-friendly versions of clothing that they already have.” Each of those designers and brands will get their own space at EPIC and allowed to customize their own displays. “It really encourages them to display their work as an art piece,” says Jones. Fashion as art is definitely not the first thing that comes to mind when the topic of L.A. is raised—a stigma of which Jones is all too aware. “I think when people think L.A.…well, you know what people think,” she laughs. But if EPIC has its say, that may not be the case for long.
